About Glidden
Glidden puts you east of Carroll on the old railhead. Your children would go to Glidden-Ralston, and you'd be living in Merle Hay's home town. It's an easy drive if you work in Carroll, which is why a lot of people here make it. Tell us what you're looking for and we'll keep an eye on Glidden for you.
For years after the Chicago and North Western reached it in 1867, Glidden was the railhead for a wide stretch of country. People came from as far as Sac County to the north and Panora to the south to catch the train. Private Merle Hay grew up on a farm nearby and enlisted with seven other Glidden men in May 1917. He was one of the first three American soldiers killed in combat in the First World War. He is buried in the town cemetery, and Merle Hay Road in Des Moines carries his name.
Served by the Glidden-Ralston Community School District.
